Reiki Principles
There are five Reiki Principles. The principles are beautiful; everybody can practice them daily without being a Reiki healer. It is about trying to live your life just in the moment. Moreover, the principles and Reiki can be a complementary part of any psychotherapy aimed at improving your mental well-being or any other treatment related to the physical body.

What are the five Reiki Principles?
Just for today, I will not be worrying
Just for today, I will not be angry
Just for today, I will do my work honestly
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing
It reminds me of the saying from Kung Fu Panda when Master Oogway said to Po,
‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift… that’s why they call it the present’.

The First Principle – ‘Do not Worry.’
If you live in the moment, then worrying is impossible. Our thoughts are energy, so positive thoughts can generate positive energy, and negative thoughts generate negative energy. Our mind is always active, and it is impossible to control it.
BG 6.34 ‘The mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Krishna, and to subdue it, is more difficult than controlling the wind’; BG 6.36 ‘…wherever, whenever the mind wonders, due to its flickering and unsteady nature, we must bring it back under the control of the Self’.
Thus, different sources and philosophies agree that the mind is tough to control, but we must try, and by practice, we can achieve the inner peace that we all seek and need. When you notice a negative thought, you can practice your free will and redirect your mind to something positive.

The Second Principle - ‘Do Not Anger’
When you feel overwhelmed by your emotions, you become angry, creating a negative energy you want to avoid. BG says, ‘When a man dwells on the objects of sense, he creates an attraction for them; attraction develops into desire, and desire breeds anger.’
Moreover, when you are angry, you do not think logically, your intelligence disappears, and you act unreasonably, which may hurt others and yourself. Dr Usui encourages us to let go of negative emotions to prevent them from ascending to anger.

The Third Principle – ‘Do your Work Honestly’
Dr Usui encourages us to work hard, and honestly, as he understands Karma, ‘what goes around, comes round’. BG ‘No one who does good work will ever come to a bad end, either here or in the world to come’. Thus ‘Do not do unto others what is unkind to you’ and try to live with integrity. ‘

The Fourth Principle – ‘Give Thanks for All Your Blessings’
Dr Usui thought that the more you focus on your blessings and show gratitude for them, the more benefits would be bestowed on you. My friend used to wake up around 5 am, open the window, and say, ‘Thank you, Universe’. That was just intuitive and had nothing to do with any philosophy, she was going through some transition in life, and I think it worked well for her. Moreover, we can say, ‘What you resist, persist’ or ‘Where is the will, there is the way’, and BG says, ‘Whatever is coming to you, you should have some level of contentment and with contentment comes gratitude. If you are discontent, how can you be grateful?’ Thus, think about all your blessings and be thankful.

The Fifth Principle – ‘No harm to Any Living Thing.’
The Buddhist principle, ‘Ahimsa’ – ‘No harm to any living thing’- is given by Dr Usui to students. It is respecting and understanding Karma – the universe or natural law- that any harm you do will return to you. Thus, being kind, caring and loving to all living entities, not only to human entities, will bring you positive Karma and positive energy.
BG ‘…I look upon creatures equally; none are less dear to me, none dearer to me…’; BG ‘Every living creature is a son of the Supreme Lord, and he does not tolerate even an ant’s being killed’. Thus, do not harm yourself if you do not want to be hurt; you will bring positive results and energy to yourself.
